Peer pressure is influence a peer group, observers, or an individual exerts that encourages others to change their attitudes, values, or behaviors to conform to those of the influencing group or individual. Social groups affected include both membership groups, in which individuals are "formally" members (such as political parties and trade unions), and cliques in which membership is not clearly defined. However, a person does not need to be a member or be seeking membership of a group to be affected by peer pressure. One may also recognize dissociative groups, with which one wishes to avoid associating, and thus behave counter to that group's norms. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peer_pressure (more)

A dollar van (also known as Commuter Van or Jit Ney) is a privately owned transportation vehicle used to carry passengers. Dollar vans typically operate in neighborhoods within a city, such as New York City, that are under-served by public Mass Transit or Taxi-s. Some of the dollar vans in Queens are licensed and regulated, while others operate illegally without licenses. Passengers may board them at designated stops along their route or hail them as share taxis (although the latter practice may be technically illegal). The name comes from the fact that it would only cost about one dollar or so to ride with such transit. Dollar vans are primarily owned and used by inner-city African/Caribbean American, Latino, and Asian American populations. The vehicles used range from 15-seat Ford Econolines to 29-seat minibuses. Yik Yak is an anonymous (Anonymity) Social Media app. It is available for iOS and Android and it allows people anonymously to create and view "Yaks" within a 10 mile radius (HyperLocal).[1] It differs from other anonymous sharing apps such as Post Secret and Whisper Text in that it is intended for sharing primarily with those in proximity to the user, potentially making it more intimate and relevant for people reading the posts.[2] All users have the ability to contribute to the stream by writing, responding, and "voting up" or "voting down" (liking or disliking) yaks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yik_Yak (more)

Steven Johnson revisits David Gelernter's Mirror Worlds. Gelernter's simulated worlds were going to be mirrors. By comparison, the simulations we have now are fantasy islands... Information about how the hospital connects to the wider city—what Gelernter calls topsight—could be had by Zooming out... "My life, like your life, is a series of events in time, with a past, present, and future," Gelernter says... A fascinating new project called Game Neverending (www.gameneverending.com) may further blur the line between real spaces and game spaces... The idea is to create new ways for information to flow from real space into virtual space. "I could have lieutenants in my cult who are allowed to draft new members," says cocreator Stewart Butterfield. "And one level up, there are cult members who can kick people out. Now, managing that group can take a lot of time, but the social interactions that are involved in that management can take place outside the game."... Somewhere in this mix of tools and interactivity, a true mirror world is brewing. Combine the visual interfaces of SimCity, the up-to-the-minute data of My Neighborhood Statistics, the multiple inroads of Game Neverending, and you'd be able to create a true alternate universe, one that was mapped to real events.
